India is a land of rich heritage, culture and tradition. It is probably one of the most gifted when it comes to gold jewellery. Years of artistry and craftsmanship have given the country a reputation for producing beautiful, ornate pieces of wearable art. Even though the times are changing as people are now buying gold jewellery online, there are some traditional craftsmen who have stood the test of time. Here are some of the techniques that you will find in the heart of Indian towns and villages: Kundan One of the oldest forms of gold jewellery designs that traces its origins back to the royal courts of Gujarat and Rajasthan, is Kundan. It is similar to the claw settings of Western jewellery. The word Kundan means ‘pure gold’ in Sanskrit and this particular style of jewellery is usually set in 24k molten gold. The setting of gems in the sea of yellow is what makes this particular design a visual delight. Meenakari Meenakari is a form of enameling work on jewellery that is known to have flourished under Raja Mansingh of the Rajputana royalty. Born in Lahore and nurtured by the Rajputana royalty, Meenakari is highly detailed and requires an absolute mastery over the craft. The word meena is derived from a Persian word which means heaven. This Indian enameling technique uses traditional designs that come out as colourful as the cities of Rajasthan. Each motif and curve in this collection is a tribute to this ancient Indian jewellery art form. Polki One of the most exquisite gifts of the Mughal’s love for the finer things, the polki style uses uncut diamonds. The elegant placing of the diamonds in their natural form lends a certain bespoke quality to the jewellery. Jadau Jadau jewellery is for the true connoisseur of jewellery. It combines the elegance of polki, the intricacy of kundan and the aesthetics of meenakari. A rather breathtaking combination, it has been practiced since the Mughal era in the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat. These techniques are a tribute to the age-old craft and artistry of India. Most of these require long, arduous hours of effort and absolute mastery over the craft. Even after so many years, their value does not seem to be depreciating; in fact people of all age groups are still in awe of the magnificent designs. Whether you belong to the generation that had a trusted family jeweller or you prefer to buy jewellery online, one thing is certain that no matter the time, these designs will always be in style.
